Install Messenger and Create an Account

Learn how to install Messenger and create your account so you can easily stay in touch with the people you care about.

Steps for Android

  1. Find and open the Play Store

    Find and open the Play Store app on your device.

  2. Go to Search

    Tap the search icon.

  3. Search for “Messenger”

    Type “Messenger” in the search bar.

  4. Tap “Install”

    Tap the “Install” button next to the Messenger app.

  5. Wait for the security scan

    Wait for the security scan to finish so you can open the app.

  6. Open the app

    When the scan is finished, tap the “Open” button at the bottom of the screen.

  7. Sign in or create an account

    If you already have Messenger or Facebook, enter your mobile number and password, then tap “Log In”. Otherwise, tap “Create New Account”.

  8. If you do not have an account, tap “Create New Account”

    Tap the button to begin the registration process.

  9. Choose the account type

    Choose whether you want to use Messenger with Facebook or without Facebook, by tapping the circle next to your choice, then tap “Next”.

  10. Tap “Confirm”

    Tap the “Confirm” button.

  11. Enter your first and last name

    Tap the fields to enter your first and last name, then tap “Next”.

  12. Choose your date of birth

    Scroll through each column to choose the day, month, and year, then tap “Set”.

  13. Select your gender

    Tap the circle next to your choice, then tap “Next”.

  14. Enter your mobile phone number

    Enter your number for notifications and tap “Next”.

  15. Create a password

    Create a secure password that you can remember but is not easy for others to guess, then tap “Next”.

  16. Confirm your number

    Enter the code sent to you in a message to confirm your number.

  17. Accept the terms

    Scroll down until you see the blue “I Agree” button, then tap it.

  18. Tap “Continue”

    Tap the blue “Continue” button.

  19. Tap the welcome screen

    Tap the screen to continue.

  20. Allow permissions

    Tap “Allow” on the permission requests that appear.

  21. Create a PIN

    Tap the button to create a PIN.

  22. Enter a 6-digit PIN

    Create a six-digit PIN for your chats that you will remember.

  23. Confirm the PIN

    Enter your PIN again to make sure it is correct.

  24. Read about cookies

    Read how cookies are used and tap “OK”.

  25. You are ready

    You can now start using Messenger.
